Sheila Sitalsing schrijft een brief voor Waleed Abu al-Khair

Waleed Abu al-Khair is een vooraanstaande advocaat in Saudi-Arabië. Hij stond veel slachtoffers van mensenrechtenschendingen bij. Hij is veroordeeld tot vijftien jaar cel, een boete van 200.000 rial (circa 50.000 euro) en een reisverbod van vijftien jaar als hij vrijkomt. Vandaag schrijven we voor hem tijdens de Schrijfmarathon. Journaliste Sheila Sitalsing schreef hem een brief.

Dear Waleed Abu al-Khair,

I am a stranger to you, nonetheless I take the liberty of writing this letter, in order to let you know that you are not forgotten, that the world knows about your predicament and that many, many people are urging for your acquittal.

I am a journalist, living in Delft, a small town in the Netherlands where it doesn’t take much courage to exercise basic rights such as freedom of expression. You however, operate in an unsafe environment where peacefully assisting victims of human rights abuses can place someone in serious jeopardy. This grave injustice saddens me and I admire your immense bravery.

Although I realize how small and insignificant this gesture is, I truly hope my letter brings some comfort to you and your loved ones. Never lose hope, hope makes live worth living, hope is what keeps us human. With persistence a drop of water hollows out the stone.
