Quote on self-immolation of refugee on Greek island

Following the news of the self-immolation of a refugee on the Greek island of Chios, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Europe, Gauri van Gulik said:

“This horrific tragedy is just the latest in a series of suicides and instances of self-harm, by refugees and asylum seekers in Greece.
“It demonstrates the complete loss of hope amongst the thousands of people stranded in Greece particularly on the islands. Uncertainty coupled with appalling living conditions is having a severe impact their well-being and mental health.
“Confinement of people on the islands must end and asylum-seekers should be transferred to mainland Greece. They should be provided with adequate reception and swiftly processed for relocation to other EU countries.”
