EU: Countries held to account for shirking refugee responsibilities
Reacting to the news that the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland will be subjected to infringement proceedings for failing to comply with EU scheme to relocate refugees from Greece and Italy, Iverna McGowan, Director of the Amnesty International, European Institutions Office said:
“Today’s decision from the European Commission makes it clear that countries will not be allowed to get away with dragging their feet to avoid accepting refugees. Solidarity is the key to a fair, and humane response to refugees in Europe.
“Today the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland have seen that failing to do their bit for people fleeing for their lives has consequences. Other countries should take heed and fulfil their obligations before they learn that the hard way.”
